General Info
The old apartment block on Ton That Dam Street, in Saigon’s downtown District 1, has been colonized by excellent cafes, hipster bars, fashion boutiques, and places to eat. What’s more, gritty and intriguing architectural vestiges lurk in every nook & cranny of this enigmatic French colonial-era complex. In the midst of rapid urban development, Saigon is losing many of its characterful, old apartments. The irony is that many of these apartment blocks are either vibrant street food zones or have become hip icons of modern, youthful Saigon. Almost nothing else in the city says ‘young, hipster, trendy, and so Saigon’ more than an old apartment complex with cafes, co-working spaces, boutiques, bars, and restaurants. Saigon’s most famous ‘apartment cafe’ is at N°42 Nguyen Hue Street. But the apartment at N°14 Ton That Dam Street (just a 10-minute stroll from its more famous sister) has long been a hip hangout. In fact, the Ton That Dam apartment was part of Saigon’s ‘cool scene’ way before the one on Nguyen Hue.

Keeping the history
Many websites say this apartment was built in 1886, but the residents say it was actually built back in 1832, which now is almost 200 years old. Surprisingly that it still lasts today, while other buildings that were built at the same time no longer exist.
"As a Vietnamese, it is such an honor for me to visit this historical building. We really need to show respect to the people who are living there cuz it is so inconvenient to stay in a small house from time to time. Furthermore, keeping the historical aspect is extremely difficult". Said by Jason Luu.
What makes this place so special?
If you are a person that wants to step back from your busy life, or after a hard-working day, visiting this building and having a cup of coffee is the best choice. Not only the taste is good, but also the views are superduper beautiful. The retro vibe of the coffee stores and the busy world outside seem like contrast but actually blend perfectly, not only vintage but also newschool.
This retro and vintage style also attracts a lot of artists and movie producers to come and get a vibe, and get ideas for their own purposes. Many Vietnamese movies took shot in this place, and plenty of famous people come to check out the Ton That Dam Apartment.
